KIT OF HEARTS

Understanding Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)

Listen to our Co-Founders, Dr Charles Larson, Pediatric Specialist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Dr Rochus Hinkel, Associate Professor at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne.

A world first

Kit of Hearts unites digital visualisations and life-size physical heart models to revolutionise how we see, explain, and understand Congenital Heart Disease.

What was once complex and abstract becomes clear, tactile, and human. Each model transforms medical data into a story of connection and discovery — helping families, students, and clinicians see the heart as never before.

Created through an extraordinary collaboration between the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and The University of MelbourneKit of Hearts redefines how we learn about the most vital organ of all.

Kit of Hearts: From Observation to Understanding.

From real stories to real models — our work transforms complex data into clarity.

Using anonymised patient data from the Royal Children’s Hospital, we craft anatomically precise 3D models – both digital and physical – that bring the invisible world of congenital heart disease to life.

Every model tells a story of the heart: colour-coded to reveal blood flow and oxygenation, robust enough for clinical use, and detailed down to the tiniest vessel. The newborn-scale models can be taken apart to explore the heart from within – a rare opportunity to see, touch, and truly understand its intricate anatomy.

Our digital versions expand this experience online. Interactive and freely available, they include guided pop-ups that explain structure, function, and condition – turning complex science into accessible learning.

Developed over three years by a multidisciplinary team of more than twenty experts, the full Kit of Hearts collection covers over 90% of congenital heart diseases – setting a new standard for medical education, communication, and empathy.

Points of Difference

Be part of a world’s first

Understanding CHD with life-size physical and digital models of anatomical precision.

Experience realistic models

Hold a model of a child’s heart, feel the heart muscle and learn about CHD conditions and oxygen levels.

See all details with precision

CHDs are complex. Look inside a child’s heart and see the exact anatomical condition.

Learn with interactive digital models

Our digital models are open access – to be viewed by anyone and anywhere.

Customise your own Kit of Hearts

Select your own set of physical CHD models based on your individual or institutional needs.

Ensure informed consent

Be able to explain surgical interventions with clarity to families and patients.
